About us

Charity Travel has been initiated by Kamiel from the Netherlands and Yeon from South Korea.
Kamiel was born on January 12th, 1979 in Tilburg, Netherlands. He studied Computer Science and Philosophy in his native country, earning two consecutive Masters degrees in 2002 and 2003. After a personal tragedy involving the death by a traffic accident of his mother, he continued studying philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin, writing a German dissertation thesis on „Freedom and Responsibility in the Philosophy of Hans Jonas“1. In the summer of 2008 he started traveling and during this journey he conceived the idea of Charity Travel to put the ideas of his thesis into practice and combine his passion for traveling with the incitement to simply do something good. He planned Charity Travel throughout 2009, establishing linkages with small-scale charities worldwide. On October 16th, 2009 he boarded a flight to London where the Odyssey began.

Yeon Choi was born on March 18th, 1973 in Seoul, South Korea. After finishing her BFA majoring in Art and Craft, she flew to New York to pursue her studies in theatre set design at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. She finished her MFA degree in 2000 and has worked for many projects as an art director in various fields. She returned to Korea in 2003 and has worked actively as a theatre set designer. She is also an illustrator, planning to publish a children's illustration book. She flew to Nairobi to join the Charity Travel on December 14th, 2009.
- Motivation -
Kamiel felt that after long years of philosophical studies and being confined to a library, it was time to head out and explore more practical hands-on aspects of life. The tragic fatal accident of his mother in the summer of 2003 made him put many things into perspective and
search for the humanly meaningful in life. A minor depression in Berlin in the summer of 2008 tipped the scale and so Kamiel set out on this exemplary journey.

Yeon has decided to join Charity Travel because she was looking for a challenge and diversity in her career as a theatre artist. Also, she had a hidden passion for charitable works. When a couple of major projects were canceled due to swine flu, she took it as an opportunity to explore her desire. Even though she is technically taking a career break, she is frequently applying her artistic skills as a designer en route.
